Andrea Pirlo has reflected on his managerial career and insists that he has consistently met the expectations placed upon him, including during his spell at Juventus, despite becoming the first Bianconeri manager in nine years not to win the Serie A title.
Juventus had established themselves as the dominant force in Italian football before Pirlo’s appointment in 2020, securing nine consecutive league championships. Expectations remained high when the former midfielder took charge, with supporters anticipating another successful campaign both domestically and in Europe.
By the conclusion of the 2020 to 2021 season, Inter Milan had brought Juventus’ remarkable run of league triumphs to an end. Although Pirlo was unable to deliver a tenth successive Serie A crown, he guided the club to success in the Italian Cup and the Super Cup during his only season in charge.
Pirlo Defends His Record
Since his departure from Turin, Juventus have been unable to reclaim the league title despite appointing several different managers. Pirlo has also found it difficult to establish himself at another elite club, although he has continued to pursue opportunities in management.
Despite the challenges he has encountered, Pirlo remains convinced that he has fulfilled the objectives set by the clubs he has represented. He believes his achievements have often been overlooked and maintains that he has delivered what was asked of him throughout his coaching career.
As reported by Il Bianconero, Pirlo said:
“I have always achieved the goals of the companies. At Juventus they asked me to get to the Champions League, done. Plus I won the Italian Cup and Super Cup.
“I left and was stuck for a year, I can’t understand why. In fact, I know but I don’t want to say it..”
Looking Ahead in Management
Pirlo could yet receive another opportunity at the highest level if he can build further momentum and add to his managerial accomplishments. For now, however, he remains adamant that his track record demonstrates an ability to meet the expectations set before him.
