Fabrizio Ravanelli has commented on the state of the current Juventus team after Inter Milan beat them in pre-season this weekend, and he believes they are still very much a work in progress.
Inter inflicted their first defeat of pre-season on Juventus, and there was a clear difference in the level both clubs have reached in recent times. It also helps explain why Inter have won the Scudetto while Juventus could not even finish inside the top four last season.
Under Luciano Spalletti, the Bianconeri appear to be making progress, but he needs time, and there are still several loose ends in the current Juventus squad.
Juventus still under construction
The Bianconeri will continue to do their best to ensure they are in the best possible shape when the season starts. They have so far shown signs of improvement, but they are not yet on Inter’s level.
Ravanelli said via Tuttosport:
“Inter’s playing facility is well known to the whole team, while Juventus is under construction, there is still a shortage of players and the workloads here in Perth have been important anyway and so it was also predictable to have during the 90 minutes of ups and downs. I think that all in all, despite the defeat, Juventus did some good things.”
Ravanelli’s assessment highlights the difference between the two sides. Inter have an established structure, while Juventus are still developing under Spalletti and working to resolve several issues within the squad.
Spalletti needs more time
The defeat therefore provides Juventus with another indication of the work that remains before they can challenge the strongest teams consistently. Spalletti has started to make progress, but the squad still needs improvements before the Bianconeri can reach the level of Inter.
The workloads during their time in Perth also played a role in the performance, according to Ravanelli, who believes the ups and downs during the match were predictable.
Despite the defeat, he still believes Juventus did some good things. That positive assessment will encourage the Bianconeri as they continue their preparations, but there is no hiding from the fact that they remain a work in progress.
Juventus must use the remaining time before the season starts to improve the squad, build consistency and close the gap to Inter.
